Bedford VA Community
Location and History
Bedford is nestled at the base of the Peaks of Otter, which are three mountain peaks in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The area also is convenient in location to the Appalachian Trail, perfect for day hikes. History buffs may note that the city is home to many notable historic sites, including Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson’s personal retreat. After suffering the heaviest U.S. casualties per capita among its local World War II recruits on D-Day, the city installed the National D-Day Memorial. As a result, the city maintains ties to communities on the Normandy coast of France.
