This list of Smith Mountain Lake events offers something for everyone to enjoy from arts and culture, food and wine, to fishing, sports, business networking and outdoor events for every season.
Crazy Horse Marina
This annual three-day event invites anglers of all skill levels and offers hourly payouts totaling more than $20,000 a day!
Smith Mountain Lake State Park
Beginning on the sandy beaches of Smith Mountain Lake State Park, continuing through the lake’s clear water and running and cycling through the trails and lands surrounding the lake, the Smith Mountain Lake Triathlon brings out athletes who enjoy a challenge.
Gill Creek Marina
For 50 years, anglers of all skill levels have come to compete for cash prizes for reeling in the largest catch from the categories of largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, muskellunge, catfish, crappie and stripers. Bonus kids tournament makes it a three-day family event!
A yearly charitable event benefiting various organizations around Smith Mountain Lake, the Tom Maynard Memorial Poker Run is a fun-filled day of boating to seven card stops around the lake, players picking up a card at each one. The top cash prize is $5,000 for being the first player with four aces! This two-day event starts with dinner and entertainment Friday night and ends with a beer garden, dinner and entertainment after the poker run on Saturday.
Smith Mountain Lake Invitational Golf Tournament
Westlake Golf & Country Club
Held each year in June, this golf tournament gives participants a chance to build and strengthen valuable business networks while enjoying a day on Smith Mountain Lake’s premier public golf course. Sponsored by the Smith Mountain Lake Chamber of Commerce.
Sponsored by Saunders Volunteer Fire Department, this annual fundraising event captures the spirit of Independence Day and has activities for the whole family with live entertainment, children’s activities and the grand finale - a spectacular fireworks display over the water!
Ahoy matey! Pirate days is a fun-filled, family weekend held the third weekend in July. Families, businesses and organizations dress the part and fly the pirate flag, taking part by decorating their boats and having mock battles. Complete with a Pirate’s Ball to kick off the festivities and live pirates roaming around the lake and Bridgewater Plaza all weekend, plus a treasure hunt for the kids!
Mariner’s Landing Resort & Conference Center
This annual event gives enthusiasts the opportunity to show off their classic and antique boats and is open for all to enjoy.
Crazy Horse Campground
For 30 years this two-day event, which features 30-plus Virginia wineries and countless arts and crafts vendors and live entertainment, has been bringing visitors from near and far. It is truly a signature even that can’t be missed.
Held in October, this three-day event features eight lake homeowners who open their homes to 3,000 visitors to support local charities. The featured homes have magnificent architecture, interior design and decor and interesting stories to share with guests. The Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour is proudly staffed by volunteers.
Westlake Towne Center
German food, music and outdoor festivities prevail in the true spirit of Oktoberfest in Westlake Plaza. Join in the 5k trail run/walk to help work off the delicious food and craft beer.
Register your chili to win or just come enjoy tasting the entries, or both! The chili and craft festival is held in early November and features the multi-category chili cook-off, live music, children’s activities and arts and crafts vendors to help you get a jump on your holiday shopping!
The Virginia Dare Flotilla for Toys is a local toy drive with all gifts distributed by Lake Christian Ministries. The parade of decked-out boats leaves port from the Virginia Dare Marina, travels to Halesford Bridge, circles past Smith Mountain Lake State Park and ends up back at the marina.
